We save $3 million a year in energy consumption.  How is this possible?

We power our entire facility with the energy we create converting food waste to fuel.

Minimizing our impact on both the environment and municipal budgets is at the core of all we do.  Originally known as our Organics-to-Energy project, Project Net Zero, our most recent capital project, was undertaken to meet 100 percent of our electricity needs by converting food waste to fuel.

Starting in 2016, reaching completion in December 2019, Project Net-Zero has allowed us to do exactly that: meet our own electricity needs through self-sufficient energy production. The project also continues to protect the health of residents with back up power capabilities and save millions for ratepayers in GLSD’s communities.

Project Net Zero is also expected to reduce  — by as much as 20 percent — collective greenhouse gas emissions within the Greater Lawrence Area, equivalent to taking 1,000 cars off area roads every year.

As state landfills fill up, innovative solutions for sustainable waste management are critical.
